'Welsh Theme'

Learning with Games

'Castle Relay'

Equipment .... oodles of boxes ( the more the better ) , broomsticks

Joey scouts form teams standing at the far end of the hall . The first Joey in each team mounts his /her trusty steed (broomstick) and rides to the quarry .

At the quarry he / she dismounts , picks up a building stone remounts and gallops to the castle site to lay the building stone .

Remounting the trusty steed , he / she then gallops back to the team and the next Joey

repeats until a castle wall has been constructed.

note .... Whenever we played this game the Joey Scouts were given the titles of 'Sir' or 'Lady' ... While running a program with the theme of 'Castles' , we all spoke to and treated each other with the chivalry of the days of old. The Joey Scouts enjoyed the opportunity to role play and it served to promote caring , respect and good manners !

'Storm the Castle'

Equipment ... tennis balls , bean bags or similar

Once the castle wall has been constructed a second game can be played .

The object of the game is to reduce the freshly built castle to rubble

Joey Scouts (around 4 at time) race from the back of the hall to a line chalked across the floor to pick up a projectile ( ball / bean bag) , hurl it at the castle wall and run back .

A variation of the game is to have the Joey Scouts stand in a line with a Leader throwing a ball/ bag randomly to them . The projectile is caught then thrown at the wall .

note .... both variations offer opportunity to exercise hand eye coordination and are GREAT FUN !!!

'Pin the Fire on the Dragon'

Equipment ...... draw a large dragon ( this can be done as a Mob activity with the Joey Scouts helping to colour the dragon red and cut him out ) some orange celophane for fire masking tape or similar to attach the fire to the dragon a blindfold ( a Joey Scout scarf will suffice )

Played the same way as 'Pin the tail on the donkey'

'Hop Scotch'

Equipment ...... chalk if in a hall , sticks if in the bush , seaweed at the beach etc also a flat rock or a piece of stick to throw ( bean bags are good as they do not bounce readily and will generally stay in the square they land in )

Draw up a hopscotch grid , this consists of 2 or 3 single squares followed by a double , a single and a double , these are numbered 1-8. Make a line about a metre back from the grid for the Joeys to stand behind or they will stand too close to the hotscotch grid and could be hurt as another Joey jumps from square to square . The 'player' steps up to the grid and throws a rock / coin / stick into the first square . Hopping over the square with the token inside it , they then hop single foot into the single squares and feet simultaniously landing in the double squares ,both up and down the grid . When they reach the square with their token inside , they bend down pick it up and hop over it into the next available space . When finished go to the end of the line to wait their next turn . This will continue until all Joey Scouts have thrown their token into each of the 7 squares (Some may need a little help )

Note : When we played this game we used 3 grids to save the Joey Scouts having to wait too long for their turn ..... you can draw up the grid any way you wish making sure you have some alternation between singles and doubles .

 'Tippie Toe '

Equipment ....... cricket bat or similar and a ball

One Joey Scout tries to protect his/ her toes from being hit with the ball while the other Joey Scouts take turns fielding and bowling the ball . When the Joey Scouts feet are touched with the ball another takes their turn at batting .

Note : good opportunity to practise team work and to use gross motor and hand eye coordination

 'Coal Miners Relay '

Equipment ...... buckets , dust pans , balls of dark paper or smallish rocks (or if you are game use coal ! )

Form Joey Scouts into teams at one end of the hall . Each team is given a bucket and a shovel (dustpan) . Taking their bucket and shovel the first Joey in each team runs or crawls to the coal mine , ( other end of hall ) , shovels some coal into their bucket , then up ends their bucket into a bin before running back to pass over the bucket and shovel to the next Joey Scout team member

Note : you will need to replenish the coal supplies by emptying the bins back into the coal pits
