On the 24th September
2000 , Tasmania's Southern Regional Joey Scouts came together at
Risdon Brook Dam to celebrate the Olympics in a very Aussie way. The
Joey Outback Games was a resounding success , with 60 Joey Scouts
along with their families and 10 leaders attending , a total of
around 130 people .
We had a special flag
ceremony complete with our own version of the Olympic flag , which
featured boomerangs and gum leaves rather than the I.O.C. rings . At
the completion of opening parade Purity's platypus Pete took the
Games torch and lit the official Outback Games cauldron ( the Aussie
BBQ) as a signal for the games to begin .
We enjoyed activities
such as , Sheep dog trials , Cow pat discus (boy did those papier
mache cow pats draw some interesting comments !) , Gum boot tossing ,
Broom stick Javelin , Handbag hurling, Bush Basket ball and Tractor
tyre relays to name a few.
After 4 hours of
Olympic style revelry everyone , parents and leaders included , were
presented with Gold medals and returned home to enjoy a very sound
sleep.
I would like to thank
all of those who attended the event and special thanks to the hard
work of the leaders , cub and scout helpers , without their help the
event would not have been the success it was . And a VERY BIG
thankyou to those businesses who loaned us their support : PURITY
SUPERMARKETS, BOB JANE TMART, CRIPPS BAKERY AND McDONALDS
RESTAURANTS.
