The Native Americans enjoyed many
different types of sport and games .
Sports helped the men to develop skills needed for hunting and
fighting ,
both individual games such as canoeing , wrestling, horce racing ,
archery competitions,
running races , spear throwing and team games like arctic kickball,
lacrosse or stick ball.
Lacrosse was a fast and violent game , with players often being hurt
or even killed while playing .
Some tribes called this sport "the little brother of war".
Spectators at these games would make bets of skins , furs , weapons
and trinkets
while chanting and cheering the players on .
Games of chance or gambling were favoured by many native Americans
,
these types of games were many and varied including the use of cards
made from rawhide
onto which bold designs were painted , or dice made from bones and
beaver teeth ,
the dice would have images of animals such as lizards ,spiders and
turtles carved into them .
Other less complex games of chance were favoured as well ,
tossing nut shells and guessing which way up they would fall into a
bowl ,
guessing which hand hid a carved bone or which moccasin contained a
pebble name just a few
PLATE OF FEATHERS
RACE
Equipment …. Feathers ,
paper plates
Races of groups of 4-5 Joey Scouts ,
each with a plate with 4 feathers on.
Object to run as fast as possible to
the end of hall and back
keeping all feathers on the plate .
If a feather flys off the plate they must stop pick up the feather
,
do a mock indian dance and continue .
Plates and feathers are then passed to the next Joey Scout in line
.
HUNTERS AND
HORSES
Equipment .... Joey
Scouts
Divide Joey Scouts into two groups
.
Have the first group form a large circle facing toward the centre
and then kneel down on all fours . These are the horses.
The 2nd group then choose a mount and stand straddling their
horse
(must stand over and not sit on their horse , for safety reasons)
.
Leader will call one of two commands "HORSES" or "HUNTERS" .
If "HORSES" is called the horse backs out from under it's rider to
run
in a clockwise direction around the whole circle and back under the
hunters legs.
If "HUNTERS" is called , the hunter dismounts and runs
in an anticlockwise direction around the outside of the circle .
Give the Joey Scouts opportunity to be both horse and
hunter.
MARBLES
A traditional Native American game
playes with rounded rocks
BUFFALO HUNT
Equipment ..... balls ,
Joey Scouts
Played as with Dodge Ball , the Joeys
are the Buffalo ,
the ball becomes the spear and the leaders are the
hunters.
SLEEPING
INDIANS
Equipment ... blindfold
and indian headband
One Joey Scout sits on the floor and is
blindfolded,
the headband is placed directly in front of this Joey Scout .
All other Joey Scouts sit in a large circle around the blindfolded
indian.
Leader selects certain Joey Scouts from the outer circle to try to
sneak up
on the blindfolded Indian and claim the headband without being
noticed.
Repeat until everyone has had a turn .
RAIN DANCE
Equipment ....
none
Joey Scouts form a very large circle
with one appointed Chief in the middle .
Secretly one Joey Scout has been chosen to set the dance step ,
which they can change at anytime, the other Joey Scouts follow the
dance
without drawing attention to the JS who is making the changes .
The Chief must try to guess who is responsible .
You can limit the amount of guesses to ensure the game flows
better.
CANOE RACES
Equipment .... long cardboard
boxes
Try to obtain carboard boxes which will
enable two Joey Scouts to fit inside
pre cut leg holes in the bottom of each box .
2 Joey Scouts climb inside their canoe
holding onto the outside with their hands
On a signal they run with their canoe to the end of the hall and back
again
passing the canoe onto the next pair.
This game would be fun to do as an obstacle course ,
having to manouver around objects, bob under suspended rope ,
rock hop across imagined shallow waters etc.
