Blown eggs offer a twofold reward....... First, you get that wonderful sensation when the egg comes splurting out (guaranteed to satisfy the most impish of egg dyers). And second, they keep beautifully from year to year.
To start, shake the egg to break the yolk. Then use a large pin or small nail to make a hole (not too small) in the top and bottom of the egg , be sure to pierce the membrane at each end . Holding the egg over a bowl, blow gently through the top hole until the egg is empty. To help preserve your creations, paint the eggs with some kind of craft sealer. If the egg is hard to blow , insert the pin back through the hole and wiggle it around to ensure the yolk has broken .
Duck eggs are stronger and larger than chook eggs and may be better for small hands to use . Eggs should be room temperature , if too cold they are very hard to blow .
Don't cry over your broken egg shells , turn them into crafts , here are a couple to try , I'm sure you will think up lots of uses for your blown egg mishaps .
With a tissue paper sail, this boat is kitchen-sink-worthy but will not withstand a storm in a tea cup
Equipment ........
Tempera paint and paintbrushes , glue , blue tack , egg shells , preferably duck or goose eggs , cellophane ...... for sails , Toothpick
Crack the egg in half and gently break off pieces to get a boat shape. Paint the shell. When the shell is dry, carefully glue a 1-2 cm ball of bluetack into the bottom of the boat. Use a toothpick to make a hole in the center of the bluetack. For the sail, cut a triangle of tissue paper about 4 inches wide by 3 inches high. Apply glue to one side, lay the toothpick in the center and fold paper in half. Dab glue onto the end of the toothpick mast and insert it into the blue tack.
EQUIPMENT ........... pipe cleaners , craft glue , tempera paints and paintbrushes , egg shells ( duck or goose preferable)
Crack eggs in half and gently break off pieces to get a flower shape. To make the stem, roll one end of the pipe cleaner into a spiral and glue to the base of the flower. Stand flowers upside down while the glue hardens (about 30 minutes). Either decorate when dry or before attaching stems , using paint or what ever you like . Twist the flower stems together to form a posy .
