HOOPLA

Equipment: Hoops, stuffed animal toys

Explain to the Joey's that sometimes at the circus the lion tamer will have lions or performing dogs jump through a flaming hoop.

Joey scouts line up at one end of the hall , leaders are positioned down a line each holding a hoop the Joey scouts become circus cats and dogs jumping through the hoops then run back up the hall to join the end of the line , alternate the position of the hoops, start with all resting on the ground , then perhaps all slightly raised , then raise one , or two , have one horizontal so the joeys need to climb up under and then over the hoop , lay one the ground Joeys need to jump into the middle raise the hoop over their body and lay it on the ground before moving to the next hoop . FUN FUN FUN

Variation: Have the Joey Scouts pretend that they are animal trainers teaching their animals to jump through a hoop. Let the Joey's take turns throwing stuffed animals through a hula hoop or other large ring.

JUGGLING JOEY'S

Equipment: bean bags

Joeys in pairs with one beanbag for each Joey Scout, simultaneously throw their bean bag for partner to catch. Try sitting, standing, walking etc while throwing to each other.

TIGHTROPE WALKING

Equipment: Bean Bags and rope or masking tape

Ask the Joey Scouts if they have ever seen a tightrope performer at the circus. Let them take turns sharing their experiences. For a fun touch let the children try carrying a small umbrella.

Joeys to balance bean bag on head and walk along a rope to the other side. If the bean bag falls off the head or the Joey falls of the tightrope they must then go to the end of the line ready to start again, alternately, appoint a Ring Master whose job it is to watch the performers and when one stumbles losing their bean bag the Ring Master picks up the fallen bean bag and replaces it onto the tightrope walkers head before they can continue their performance.

Challenge the Joey Scouts to walk along the tight rope without losing their balance they can try this pretending to be either clowns or tight rope walkers. Next time, demonstrate variations on the tightrope: jumping, hopping along on one foot, holding a balloon over their heads, balancing coins on the backs of hands. And for the finale, turn on some music and the Joey's can make up a crazy clown dance as they rock across the rope.

Try having your Joey Scouts walk the tight rope using different parts of their bodies; Call out directions such as these. 'Walk the tightrope on your toes! Walk the tightrope using your elbows! Walk the tightrope on your knees!' This is ideal for regulating the difficulty level for younger and older Joey Scouts.

CIRCUS PERFORMERS RELAY MADNESS

Equipment: 2 chairs per team

Form teams, the more teams the better. If teams are not even try to rope in some parents or allow some Joey Scouts to take on 2 names

Each team stands in a straight line behind a chair. The second chair is placed some distance away. The leader gives each member of the teams the name of a circus performer e.g. all the number ones are Ring Master, all the number twos are Lion Tamers etc The last person on each team is always the Circus Clown.

If the leader calls the name of a circus performer the team member who has that name runs from their place, around the far chair and back to the end of the team line.

If the leader calls Circus Clown the last person on the team must crawl under the legs of all the members of their team before running to the far chair and back into place with their team. Nearing the end of the game everyone can be a clown so that all have a chance to dive through the legs of their team mates. To avoid confusion just add clown to their performers name ie: "Trapeze clown, Strong man clown, Bearded lady clown"

MUSICAL DRESS UP

Equipment: Lots of brightly coloured clown type clothes, large garbage bags or basket with a cover over it.

Leaders or Joey Scouts must bring to the meeting several odd or brightly coloured articles of clothing bring these are all put into a garbage bag and this is passed round the circle while the music plays, very much like pass the parcel. Whoever has the bag when the music stops has to reach in and take something out of the bag without looking and wear it. The results are hilarious, everyone is guaranteed a good laugh.

LET'S LIMBO!

Equipment: broom stick, music

How low can you go? Teach your Joey Scouts to limbo.

Two people hold the ends of a broom handle as the Joey Scouts dance under without touching it. Move the stick lower and lower until the Joey's have to lie on the floor to get under it. It's bound to inspire giggles; especially when it's your turn!

CLOWN CAR

Equipment: large cardboard box, decorating items such as paint, textas, crayons, coloured paper shapes and of course; paper plates for wheels

How many Joey Scouts can fit in a large cardboard box?

As an activity have your Mob decorate a large cardboard box as a clown car (most hardware, furniture or electrical shops will have one in their bin - and don't forget to make sure all of the dangerous staples have been removed.) As an activity this will keep your Mob happy for ages and encourage co-operation.

To play the game, place the box in the middle of the hall with sheets of newspaper (one less sheet than Joey scouts) laid out around the playing area. It is useful to draw chalk arrows marking a direction for the Joey Scouts to travel. Start the music and the Joeys move around the hall following the trail, once the music stops they must find a sheet of newspaper to stand on . The Joey who is not standing on a piece of paper must climb into the box. Start the music again and remove one sheet of paper, continue until there is no room left in the box or you run out of newspaper.

ELEPHANT ACT

Equipment: A very very long rope stretched in a circle around the hall.

Joey Scouts form a line the 1st tries to balance along the rope while everyone sings

'One grey elephant balancing , step by step on a piece of string
He thought it was such a wonderful stunt , that he called for another elephant'

The first Joey Scout will then point to a 2nd Joey who joins in by holding hands with the first and so on, this time there would be 'two grey elephants balancing step by step on a piece of string' etc soon you will have a giant line of grey elephants balancing on a piece of string which once they have all joined MUST surely break !!! The Joey Scouts crash dramatically to the floor. More than one Joey Scout at a time can be called up to join the balancing act.

SIDE SHOW ALLEY

Equipment: painted box and bean bags

Joey Scouts form a long line in front of the box the object is to throw the bean bags into the open mouth of the animal painted on the box.

GOING TO THE CIRCUS

Joeys sit in a circle. Play begins by one person saying "I'M GOING TO THE CIRCUS AND I'M GOING TO TAKE.......(here the Joey chooses an object to take to the circus with them for example ). AN UMBRELLA." The next person says "I'M GOING TO THE CIRCUS AND I'M GOING TO TAKE... AN UMBRELLA AND SOME MONEY "

The next person says " I'M GOING TO THE CIRCUS AND I'M GOING TO TAKE ...AN UMBRELLA , SOME MONEY AND A DRINK " and so on .

If the message is retold incorrectly everyone can help the person remember by giving hints.

CIRCUS CLOWN

Have the children sit in a circle and sing 'I am a circus clown my name is ding-a-ling can _________ (name of child) come in the middle and do a funny thing.' Continue around the circle until everyone has had a turn. You might even want to paint the faces of the Joey Scouts like clowns before you play.
