My name is Jennifer , however in Scouting circles I am known as 'Yowie' . I am the Joey Scout Leader for 1st Lindisfarne Scout group, in Southern Tasmania , Australia .
Like most Scout Leaders , I became involved in Scouting because my children were . In fact it was only about 3 weeks after they started as Joey Scouts that I was asked to consider the position of JSL .
I can say without any reservations it was one of the best things I have ever done . Scouting is great fun , not only for the youth members , but also for the Leaders , this is a key element to the world wide success of the Scouting Family.
Scouting in the 1st Lindisfarne Scout group is truly a family affair . As I mentioned before both my children are Scouts , my son Alex is now a Cub Scout and my daughter Jenna-Lee is a Scout , my brother (known as Wombo) is a Scout Leader with 1st Lindisfarne , he has 4 sons , a Joey , a Cub , a Scout , and a Venturer ,
Wondering about my Scout name ? It is the tradition of the Joey Scout Section for Leaders to adopt a name which can be related to Australia , this may be in the form of native flora and fauna , well known literary characters , aboriginal names etc ...
A Yowie is an Australian mythological creature , said to be the guardian or protector of the Australian bush and it's creatures . It is a close cousin of the Bunyip , which is the guardian or protector of the Australian rivers , billabongs , lakes , dams etc and all the flora and fauna found living on or near them . There are said to be two types of Bunyip , the kind and gentle two-eyed Bunyip and the dire bad tempered One-eyed species , who is reputed to delight in eating wayward , disobedient children . As I was growing up my Father would tell me tales of Bunyips and Yowies and would warn me , in hushed tones to beware the one-eyed Bunyip . I wasnt always good , but with the thought of that heinous one-eyed Bunyip just waiting for an opportunity to claim me for his dinner , I tried hard !
